THE GET DOWN

My dear friend whom I met when I first arrived to LA told me she wanted to take me on a food adventure to her homeland, Ethiopia. And so we arrived … to Fairfax Street that is.

Without hesitation, Semi (my friend) suggested we eat at Meals by Genet. As soon as we opened the door, we were warmly greeted like family. And shortly after we sat down, one dish after another appeared in front of us.

Dorowat, Atkilt, Azifa, Gomen … American translation: Spicy chicken, potatoes, lentils, collard greens… so sooooo good. Ethiopian food is of course eaten with Ingera, a sourdough flatbread with a spongy consistency which adds to the authenticity (and intimacy) of the experience.

If you have the tots in tote, you miiiight want to pack a sandy in your bag to get ya comfortably through this meal. Though the tots might enjoy picking apart the Ingera, Genet will probably be around to make something special for the fussy ones in the event you forget the sandy. I learned a lot about the Ethiopian culture sitting at Meals by Genet.

I’m convinced the phrase ‘it takes a tribe’ derived from this part of the country. In Ethiopia, moms are moms to everyone’s child. If a mom is breastfeeding and another baby is hungry, then her boobs become an open- ended meal ticket.

After our Meals by Genet experience, Semi, Capri and I explored the two block radius of Ethiopian town; it was all a fantastic and magical experience.

Rating System:

It’s our goal to make exploring LA either with the kids or with grown ups as easy as possible. Click through the tabs above to check out our rating system.

For those with little
runners & screamers:

Easily forgiven:

Here, you can forget the fact that it’s your rambunctious child that’s screaming and STILL enjoy most of your meal.

Not promoted, but you should take the chance:

If your toddler is at the stage when an iPad or some other colorful distraction can be used for an un-interrupted 20 minutes, then go for it.

Uh-uh, NO WAY, don’t even think about it!:

I don’t care how cute your toddler is. Pop your head in… turn around… walk away. PERIOD.

No contained area:

A place you cannot leave your toddler alone, not even for a second.

Enclosed, but space is tight:

If YOU can’t fit between the tables then you know you couldn’t catch your toddler if they tried – this isn’t Norm’s.
